김아람(b.1994)은 인간에 의해 결정되는 동물의 생존, 소비, 존재 방식 등에 대한 윤리적 문제들을 탐구한다. 특히 ‘가축’, ‘유해 조수’, ‘생태계 교란종’과 같은 기피 동물과의 불가피한 공존에 주목하고 있다. 동시에 우리 사회와 물리적, 심리적으로 먼 이 대상들에게 오히려 인간과 긴밀히 연결되는 아이러니한 지점들을 발견한다. 주로 다큐멘터리 형식을 통해 동물과 인간의 공존을 있는 모습 그대로 드러내는 방식을 취하며, 동물의 생태적 특성을 이용한 퍼포먼스 영상 시리즈를 제작해 왔다.
대표적으로는 <도브맘> (2019)과 <박멸의 공존> 시리즈(2021~2023)가 있다. <도브맘>은 ‘비둘기’를 포획해서 동거하는 5일간의 생활을 기록했다. 이를 통해 유해 조수로 지정된 비둘기가 인간과 함께 사회에서 어떻게 살아갈 수 있을지에 대한 도덕적이거나 제도적인 물음들을 ‘동거’라는 특정 상황으로 제기한다. <박멸의 공존>은 생태계 교란종으로 지정된 ‘뉴트리아’의 사냥꾼을 밀착 취재하여 인간의 관점으로 ‘유해’하다는 것이 도대체 무엇인지 고민한다. 이후 여전히 생존하고 있는 뉴트리아에게 바디캠(bodycam)을 장착하여, 박멸과 공존이라는 섞일 수 없는 단어와 구분이 만들어내는 모순적인 상황을 드러낸다. 이와 같이 작가는 사람과 사회의 관점으로 규정해 온 동물의 존재 방식에 대해 다각도로 의문을 제기하며, 여러 프로젝트로 이를 공론화한다.
Rahm Kim (b. 1994) explores ethical issues related to the survival, consumption, and existence of animals as determined by humans. She particularly focuses on the inevitable coexistence with undesirable animals such as "livestock," "pests," and "invasive species." At the same time, she discovers ironic points of connection between these entities, which are physically and psychologically distant from our society, and humans. Through documentary formats, she captures the coexistence of animals and humans as it is and has produced a series of performance videos utilizing the ecological characteristics of animals.
Her notable works include <Dove Mom> (2019) and the <Coexistence of Extermination> series (2021–2023). *Dove Mom* documents five days of living with a captured pigeon. This work raises moral and institutional questions about how pigeons, designated as pests, can coexist with humans in society, using the specific scenario of "cohabitation." <Coexistence of Extermination> closely follows hunters of nutria, an invasive species, to explore what it means to be considered "harmful" from a human perspective. Later, body cameras (bodycams) are attached to surviving nutria, revealing the contradictory situation created by the incompatible concepts of extermination and coexistence. Through these projects, Kim critically examines and publicizes the human-defined modes of animal existence.
