대한민국에서 뉴트리아는 ‘생태계 교란종’에 속한다. 그리고 환경부는 뉴트리아를 2023년까지 박멸하는 계획을 발표한다.

한국은 공식적으로 뉴트리아의 공존을 금지하지만, 완전한 퇴치 또한 불가능하다고 밝힌다. 뉴트리아의 박멸과 공존이 동시에 진행된다. 그러나 이 동물은 이미 공존하고 있기에 박멸 하는 것일까? 아니라면 박멸하기 때문에 공존할 수도 있는 것인가? 공존의 의미는 변화되는 것인가?

잠시만, 공존은 인간의 선택에 모두 맡겨지는 것인가?

나는 이러한 질문을 가지고 낙동강유역환경청, 뉴트리아를 포획하여 1억을 벌었다는 사냥꾼, 동물자유연대와 만났다. 각 인물들과 다큐멘터리적 거리를 두면서도, 때로는 내가 그것을 깨고 일시적으로 상황에 개입한다. 이를 통해 공존을 위해서 박멸의 필요를 납득하게 되는 과정을 역설적으로 드러내고자 한다.

With these questions, I met with the Nakdong River Basin Environment Agency, a hunter who captured nutrias and earned 100 million won, and the Animal Freedom Alliance. While keeping a documentary distance from each character, sometimes I break it and intervene in situations momentarily. Through this, I want to paradoxically express the process of convincing the need for eradication for coexistence.
