나는 닭의 기형적 울음 소리를 상상한다. 현대의 닭은 울음은 커녕 숨도 제대로 쉬지 못하는 동물이 되었기 때문이다.

본 작업은 비대한 기형적인 닭을 청각화 시키는 방법으로, 닭 울음소리(꼬끼오) 를 최대한 길게 늘려 발성해 보는 시도다. 성악가와 의성어를 건반(‘꼬’>도#, ‘끼’> 파, ‘오’>레#)으로 옮기고, 발성 및 호흡 교정을 통해 소리를 변형한다. 약 3개월 간 훈련을 통해 30초 미만의 소리를 약 3분까지 늘리는 기록을 세웠고, 각 소리 들을 병합하여 인위적으로 늘어나는 “꼬끼오"를 보여 준다. 이는 닭의 전형적인 이미지와 현대 닭의 모습에서 오는 괴리감을 표현하고, 인간과 공존하고 있는 가축의 삶을 청각적으로 재구성한 것이다.

I imagine the distorted cries of chickens. This is because modern chickens have become animals that cannot even breathe properly, let alone cry.

 

This work aims to depict the unusually enlarged appearance of a chicken with a prolonged and stretched chicken cry (Kokkio). Collaborating with Yong-Tae Ahn, the vocalist, we replaced the onomatopoeia with keyboard notes ('Kko' > Do#, 'Ki' > Pa, 'O' > Re#), and transformed the chicken cries into long notes through vocalization and breathing adjustments. After approximately three months of training, I achieved a record of extending a sound that was originally less than one minute to 2:42. In the video, these records are compiled to reveal the artificially stretched sound of "Kkokkio".

This expresses the disparity between the conventional perception of chickens as a species and modern chickens, while reconstructing the lives of farm animals coexisting with humans in an auditory manner.
